3.4.3 Public Transportation

One of the advantages of today’s London is well-developed and evenly distributed public transportation network; the opposite of the case in the nineteenth century. Today not only the central London but also town centres around London are accessible by public transportation modes. Highly accessible public transportation network of the city is composed of the underground, the over-ground, DLR, railways and the extensive bus network (The London Plan 2008, p. 56).

There are also several new transportation projects in connection with the development projects, and it is aimed at achieving a number of goals. First, the location of development areas has been chosen to increase sustainable transportation modes, such as walking and cycling. Second, the main concern is to choose development areas that could reduce the need to travel. As a third option development areas can be located around the key interchanges such as major rail or underground stations so as to maximize the use of the already existing transportation network (The London Plan 2008, p. 126). According to these criteria, one of the development areas is the “Thames Gateway,” which necessitates more river crossings in the East London to achieve regeneration and development. In this area, the priority is given to improve access for people, goods and services between the north and south of the River Thames in the regeneration and development of the Thames Gateway region (The London Plan 2008, p. 126).
